This is the kind of film that doting fathers used to make, and clearly still do, to launch their aspiring star sons, where the elements of hero-hood – singing, dancing, fighting—crowd every inch of script space.


Old school producer Vashu makes sure that sonnyboy Jackky does all this, and then takes out some insurance: in ‘Kal Kissne Dekha’, the small town lad from Chandigarh who fetches up in a Mumbai college to make his future can, oh my god, see the future.


In a better film, this could have been the twist to lift what turns out to be a sad ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ knock-off. The college doesn’t look anything like a college, just a series of sets.


Students seem to spend all their time sprawled on the steps, engaged in silly banter. Tough seniors become friendly pussy cats. And the heroine, also a debutant, and also belonging to an established Bollywood family (Vaishali is the grandniece of Manmohan Desai) only wears skimpy skirts, striped leggings, stilletoes, and parlour-ready ringlets.


Absurdities pile up. A gangster (Rahul Dev) and his moll toil in a wet basement to blow up the city with clunky contraptions made of coloured plastic.


A science professor (he used to be a scientist, imagine that) is a seriously bad guy, and Rishi Kapoor is a seriously bad choice for the part. Bombs get triggered here and there. And our man who sees the ‘bhavishya’ spends his time tracking them down, when he is not singing bad songs to his leading lady: there’s not one hummable ditty in this film.


The two leads are likeable enough, but they don’t have it in them to rise above this startlingly sub-standard film.

Something new seems to happening in the moribund area of childrens’ films: the moralising that used to be laid on with a heavy trowel is slowly becoming a light shovel. It’s not gone yet, and it’s unlikely that it will disappear completely, but it looks as though now kids can be just kids, in at least some of the running time of the film.


‘Zor Laga Ke Haiya’ is about a bunch of ecologically aware kids (Megan, Hardik, Ayesha, Ritwick, Ashwin) trying a save a tree in their compound. For this, they have to fight against a greedy builder (Gulshan ) and his faithful ‘chamcha’ contractor (Mahesh), and a sinister-looking homeless person (Mithun), who lives across the road in a ramshackle lean-to.


Turns out that he is actually a good man who ran away from home because of his son’s hard-heartedness. It also turns out that the 13 year old child labourer Ram (Ashwin) who is forced to work on the site by the contractor, knows how to use planks and nails and create a treehouse. That becomes the focal point for the kids’ play, and struggle to keep the tree alive.


Good intention, lax execution. There’s no focus in the first half; it’s only post interval that the young green warriors swing into action, and create interest. The end, when a Ganapati Bappa idol appears within the tree and scares the cutters away nearly ruins everything, though: to keep the flag of superstition flying should not be the purview of feature films targeting children.


What saves it is the acting—the adults do their job well (Seema Biswas is fine); the children are natural (Ashwin Chitale is superb). You only wish that they were not made to sing songs periodically, and state the most obvious things. Kids are way smarter.

Detective Naani: Grand Mess

During her daily ritual of morning walk, 75 year old Naani (Ava Mukherjee the famous Dabur model) witnesses a small girl (Saili Shettye) peeping at her nervously. Intrigued, as Naani tries to find more about the girl she stumbles on a huge racket. In her mission to unearth the big mystery she is aided by her aspiring detective grandson (Zain Khan) as also from some unexpected quarters. How her mission ends in a success and what positive changes this journey brings in the lives of Naani and those around her form the rest of the plot.


The basic plot premise sounds interesting on paper but the whole execution and unintelligent screenplay makes you wish it could have better made into an episode of a TV series. Since it has an unusual detective jodi of a grandmother and her grandson, the whodunit should have been laced with more funnier and imaginative moments. But unnecessary time is wasted on lack luster sub plots such as the two online lovers etc. Even the intended romantic track between the investigating CID officer (Ankar Nayyar) and Naani's divorcee daughter (Amrita Saluja) appears half baked. What is worse is the running time which stretches to 135 minutes. You keep looking at your watch as one stupid sequence follows the other, hoping it all to end!


Sometimes you feel like forgiving all the above problems since it's the director's debut attempt and try to take solace in good acting but well you are disappointed on this front as well. While Zain Khan gets irritating after a point the rest all are no good either. Ava Mukherjee is the only saving grace.


Just give this film a miss. It tries to be a cute whodunit but ends up being a mess and a waste of your time.

Suno Na – Ek Nanhi Aawaz: Is simply boring.

Small town girl from Andhra, Anupama’s (Tara Sharma) boyfriend ditches her after she becomes pregnant. But Anu taking a brave step decides to get keep the child much against her family’s wishes. Facing their opposition, she moves to Mumbai with her best friend Raina (Rinku Patel) and even manages to get a job. Soon she begins experiencing an unusual thing. She starts hearing her yet unborn child talking to her. She names her unborn child Sammy and starts enjoying conversations with it. As Anu sets out to get a father for her child, she encounters three men from varied backgrounds. First one is her neighbour, musician HMV (Avinash), the second one is middle class professor Dhruv (Dharmendra Gohil) and the third one is her office colleague Deepak (Makrand). But then as Anu is trying to zero down on one, she realizes HMV is gay, Deepak is too conservative to accept someone else’s child and Dhruv is heartbroken on knowing she is carrying someone’s child without marrying him. Finally it boils down to a hospital climax which is the height of idiocy wherein all the three suitors are shown going inside the labour room wearing the scrubs. As expected by the audience by now, the new born turns out to be a girl. Professor saab Dhruv then makes Anu realize that it was her own inner voice she was listening to and not the unborn baby’s!


The whole concept of the film is suited more for a TV serial than a full fledged film. As you sit down to watch the film, your interest wanes of 20 minutes into the film. Lack of imaginative writing, screenplay full of clichés seen umpteen times before starts grating on your nerves and you wait for the film to end. Towards the end also you lose the curiosity who shall Anu end up with.


Tara Sharma is a decent actress but has a bad dialogue delivery. Amongst the three newcomers in male leads, Avinash Tiwari is okay while the rest two just about pass the muster. Rinku Patel is good.


Just give this film a pass and save yourself the agony which seems much worse than actual labour pains.

Their interaction with Punjabi youth is very entertaining as humor comes out of these situations. It is for the first time that these NRI’s will be seen talking and dressing as typical Britishers. The film is treated like a romantic comedy..
