Delhi 6 Movie Online Review:

First things first. What does the name of the film signify? I had grown up in Delhi and call it home, but to my shame I had no clue what Delhi 6 was till I was glibly educated by a friend from Chennai of all places. Delhi 6, he told me, is Chandni Chowk, or to be precise it is the postal code of that area. For those who are familiar with the city of Delhi, Chandni Chowk is evocative of several everlasting images: narrow, crowded streets, mosques, temples, ancient, dilapidated houses, small shops, pushcarts selling handicrafts, food, sweets, clothes and other colourful paraphernalia and crowds of people on foot, cycles and rickshaws swarming like shoals of fievery direction. It is in this world that this film is based.

Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) brings his grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) to Delhi all the way from the U.S. of A and gets involved in the mad, mad world that is Chandni Chowk. He is, of course, the typical NRI kid who is at once enamoured, amused and frustrated by the convolutions of life in his home town. He is surprised by the adulation he is given by people he doesn’t even remember, scoffs at the concept of arranged marriage, is enraged by the overwhelming influence of religion and superstition in the society and breaks into slightly lame hip-hop moves when his aunts are singing folk songs. The film is predictably about his tryst with the city and how he comes to terms with it and learns to accept and love it, flaws and all. But that is the only predictable thing about the film.

The story is… well… to put it mildly, strange, but not in a bad way. The movie can be neatly divided into two parts: the first part, which is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s personal tribute to Chandni Chowk, and the second part, in which Mehra suddenly realises that he needs to tell a story as well. Nothing really happens in the first half. Chandni Chowk is presented in all its bustling, colourful glory in quick pictorial montages and breathtaking cinematography. Characters are introduced along with plot points and themes and it is all done rather cleverly. But the viewer is left wondering where the story is going and what all of it is leading to because the plot seems to lose itself just before the intermission. It’s as if the whole purpose of the first half is to lay the groundwork for the second half which is explosive in comparison. The story unfolds quickly and the viewer begins to understand the importance of some of the events in the first half and as things rapidly go pear-shaped the movie sets up for a dramatic and unexpected climax.

The actors have done a good job with Abhishek Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman and Sonam Kapoor putting in very competent performances, but the supporting actors steal the show in my humble opinion. Powerful performances by Atul Kulkarni, Om Puri, Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta and Vijay Raaz keep the film real and moving. But the characters take a backseat to the visual appeal of the film. Where Rang De Basanti had strong characters who just happened to be from Delhi, the characters in this film seem incidental to the city. The co-existence of Hindus and Muslims in Chandni Chowk is the most important aspect of the film. Hence, the film regularly breaks into a splendid colourful theatrical performance of Ram Lila on the one hand and has several magnificent shots of thousands of Muslims kneeling in prayer at the Jama Masjid. A.R. Rehman’s score for this film is also very good and in my opinion far superior to that of Slumdog Millionaire.

The film is a homage to Delhi and Chandni Chowk, but it isn’t a letter of recommendation. It shows the beauty and grandeur of the city and the hearts of the people that live in it, but it also shows the squalor, the corruption, the blindness and the sheer stupidity. It shows you that it is a city that must be loved and hated, and by that token makes it believable and more importantly human. If you love Delhi, you should watch this movie. For those you don’t love Delhi, this isn’t a must watch, but it is a good watch, and it just might persuade you to make a trip.

Aa Dekhen Zara Movie Online Review:

Ray Acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh), a struggling photographer has nothing going for him… until he inherits a very ‘special’ camera from his grandfather which changes his life in a way that he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams.

The ‘power’ of the camera changes Ray’s destiny overnight. His life becomes one big roller coaster ride that takes him from rags to riches and also helps him meet the love of his life, Simi (Bipasha Basu) who is an exciting sexy DJ with a mind of her own. Everything is hunky dory and moving towards ‘happily ever after’.

As they say with great power comes great responsibility and in Ray’s case, also great danger. He must now face up to the dark side of reality and win not only against the evil forces but also against fate.

Aa Dekhen Zara is a fast-paced, romantic musical thriller with some great edge of the seat action.

Can Ray change his date with fate? Aa Dekhen Zara...........

Movie Review
The Film

Billa is a stylistic film with vibrant visuals and stunning stunts. This is a remake of Ajit’s Billa in Tamil, which in turn is the remake of Shah Rukh Khan’s Hindi Don which again was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s Don.

The Synopsis

Billa (Prabhas) is an underworld don with international ramifications operating from Kula Lampur, Malaysia. His key associates include Ranjit (Supreet) and Lisa (Namitha). Maya (Anushka), sister of Vijay (Subbaraju) an erstwhile member of the don’s gang executed by Billa, joins with an intention of seeking vengeance on the don.

Krishnamurthy (Krishnamraju), an Assistant Police Commissioner, is on the trail of Billa the don and shoots him in an encounter. The death of don is not publicized. By a strange coincidence, the ACP finds a petty thief Ranga (Prabhas again) who is a look alike of the dead Billa.

The ACP gives professional training to Ranga and unleashes him on the underworld impersonating Billa the don. The rest of the story deals with the fight of ACP and Ranga against Billa’s network.

The Performances

Prabhas looks very fit and fashionable and gives a very effective performance. Veteran Krishnam Raju is a misfit as an ACP. Namitha, Anushka and Hansika Motwani fill in the glamour part of the film and they have nothing much to do in a male oriented action film.

Supreeth and Kelly Dorji are convincing. Subbaraju, Rehman, Jayasudha and Ali are adequate in their cameos.

The Techniques

Being a remake, nothing much can be said about story and screenplay. But, the post-interval narration speed dips and drags. The dialogues lack punch and director Meher Ramesh should have taken the help of a professional, proficient dialogue writer. Mani Sharma’s music is neither foot tapping nor pleasing to the ear.
Sounder Rajan’s cinematography is brilliant, to put it mildly. Siva’s stunts will please action lovers. The editing and audiography could have been better. The production values are high.

The Verdict

The stylistic package called Birla can be enjoyed for its vibrant visuals, rich locales, the make over stylish looks of Prabhas and scintillating action sequences.

The Cast and Crew

Prabhas, Krishnam Raju, Namitha, Anushka, Hansika Motwani, Supreet, Kelly Dorji, Rehman, Subba Raju, Jayasudha, Ali and others.

Music: Mani Sharma

Cinematography: Soundar Rajan

Stunts: Stun Siva

Director : Vikram K. Kumar
Release Date : 6 March 2009
Genre : Horror, Thriller

Movie Review

Vikram K Kumar's 13B did what a horror movie needs to do – gave goosebumps at every turn in the first half. It is shot in monochrome and the background score puts a chill into the mundane.

But as it moves into flashback mode and an agitated Madhavan tries to save his family, there are too many twists and the story starts losing credibility. The story is all over the place and the eerie quality created right at the start is soon forgotten.

An abnormally happy joint family (do they even exist these days?), move into a posh apartment numbered 13B. The milk curdles daily; Manu’s (Madhavan) pics taken on his camphone inside the apartment are always distorted; they can’t drive a nail in the puja room; the elevator never works only for Manu forcing him to take the stairs (terrifying indeed!!!); the neighbour’s dog refuses to enter their apartment and the television automatically switches to channel 13 at 13:00 hours to a program that is exclusively aired for their family.

Though the women in the house are ga-ga over the show Sab Khairiyat Hai, it is only Manu who realizes that their life is dictated by that show. He drags into this supernatural mess, his police officer friend Shiva and starts putting together the pieces. A gory massacre of a family; a murderer still out free while the family’s mentally ill brother (Deepak Dobriyal) is accused of the crime; a spurned lover and the television’s part in the crime is what they uncover.

The blindman and the rest of the cast’s roles were trivial while Madhavan was the only one with something to do in the movie.

Give it a miss. Doesn’t captivate.

Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Sanjay Suri, Deepti Naval, Shahana Goswami, Tisca Chopra and Paresh Rawal

Director: Nandita Das

Movie Review

The film takes place over a 24 hour period and a month after the infamous Godhra incident which were followed by a horrific communal carnage in the state of Gujarat. It peeks into multiple characters amongst such as Aarti (Deepti Naval), a housewife who is silently haunted by the image of a Muslim woman begging for sanctuary. Another is Khan Saheb (Naseer), a renowned musician who lives in a Hindu area, and teaches classical music. He cannot understand the destruction of his familiar world, and naively assumes that it is possible for the two communities to live together. There is also Muneera (Shahana), who hides with friends during the violence, and returns to her home to find it burned to the ground. And there is Sameer (Suri), a young, dashing, wealthy Muslim married to a Hindu Anuradha (Tisca), who is torn between the dilemma of staying in Ahmedabad or leaving for another city where he and his wife might be safer. Lastly, there are the stories of other hapless Muslims, who make incompetent plots to take revenge.

Despite choosing such a heavy subject in her directorial debut film, actress Nandita Das has succeeded in handling it with utmost sensitivity and technical finesse. With an able technical support from India’s finest technicians such as cameraman Ravi K. Chandran (Ghajini, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and editor Sreekar Prasad (Guru, Yuva) Nandita has managed to assemble and ensemble cast of talented actors which take the film to a completely different level. The stories are not exactly interwoven but do manage to strike a chord. Firaaq’s strength lies in focusing on ordinary Hindus and Muslims whose lives were affected by the riots. Nandita barely resorts to showing graphic violence on screen and it’s fear, anger and anxiety are all understated.

Paresh Rawal in a serious role after a long time is a treat to watch. Sanjay Suri carries one of his most difficult roles with aplomb. Tisca playing his wife lends able support. Shahana Goswami post Rock On delivers yet another award worthy performance. But it is Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval making a comeback on screen after a long gap whose performances linger on your mind long after the film is over.

Firaaq is not meant for the faint hearted or those seeking two hours of time pass. It shows us the uncomfortable truths and painful reality in which the people of our country must live, as they set about repairing the destroyed trust between two communities.

8x10 Tasveer 2009

Movie Review

Akshay Kumar is shattered by an incident, which takes place when he is perhaps eight years old. Deeply traumatized he absorbs the power of venturing into a photograph to understand what could have transpired, thus helping many who come to him for help when the police have failed. He now has the unenviable task of venturing into a photograph, clicked just moments before his father could die, to find out whether it was murder or natural death. His journey to unravel the mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat. What the incident was that moved him to these powers is vaguely shown, and you realize towards the end that it was not a convincing shot because his parents were not at all shattered by that huge loss. In fact, it looks like a picnic out when the tragedy was colossal.

I will not divulge what the tragedy was, because that would mean giving the story away. But I have a question for Kukunoor. How could you show such a tragic incident so nonchalantly? I mean, we as an audience think it is the loss of a football, when the fact is little Jai (Akshay Kumar's) world has come crashing down. And his parents, I mean they do not even acknowledge the loss, or were they not told of the scene you were canning? Even the hospital scene where Akshay is helped by a staff on duty for a blood transfusion in a storeroom is not happening……
