Director Vikraman and Vijayakanth, the combination that did the super successful 'Vanathai Pola' in 2000, is back with a bang! This time, it is 'Mariyadhai', which the director assures will be a different film for the ‘captain’ fans.

“We’ve made sure there’s no political influence in the film. It is a clean entertainer and everybody will enjoy it,” says the director.

The film was scheduled to release yesterday, but it is said to be postponed to April 24. The Censor Board had given a clean chit to the film, with a U Certificate.

With director Vikraman insisting that this is the first time that he has ever written a script keeping an actor in mind, 'Mariyadhai' is eagerly awaited by Captain’s fans as the hero really deserves a hit now.

Movie Review 1977:
Sarath Kumar and action seems inseparable. The actor, who has made a name for himself being part of action-packed ventures, has come out with a movie that is racy from the first frame. Ad man –turned – director Dinesh Kumar has tried to showcase Sarath Kumar as a ‘desi’ James Bond, who romances and fights hard (jumps from sky-scrapers, dives from helicopters, bashes group of baddies and shoots distant targets at ease).

Donning a dual role that of a father and son is Sarath Kumar. However what is strikingly different in this routine commercial formula film is Dinesh Kumar’s sincere attempt to make it look stylish. In a nutshell, it is the story of a son taking cudgels against a gang of baddies in foreign soil to avenge the atrocities they had committed some three decades ago on his father.

The movie begins at a fishing hamlet in Tamil Nadu where an elderly Rajashekar (Sarath Kumar) is worshipped as ‘God Father’ by many. His amiable ways of living won him many friends. His son Vettrivel (younger Sarath Kumar) is an acclaimed scientist. He is received with gusto by the whole village after he returns winning awards from Central government.
Unfortunately a glance at a vernacular on a new report on Malaysia shocks Rajashekar, who immediately develops cardiac arrest and dies. Vettrivel comes to know about the incident and decides to unravel the mystery behind his death. He sets off to Malaysia. Vettrivel gets acquainted with a local reporter Inba (Farzana), who falls for Vettrivel. With her help, he finds find out a disturbing truth about his father’s life. Rajashekar is former police officer in Malaysia who falls to the conspiracy of a baddie and arrested for no fault of his. Rajashekar eventually pays the price for being honest by losing his family and settles down in Tamil Nadu with his young son.

In his quest to prove that his father is innocent, Vettrivel re-opens the case and gets the help of Chandhini (Namitha) a lawyer who is the daughter of erstwhile public prosecutor. He also finds his mother (Jayasudha) in the process. The rest of the movie is all but how Sarath Kumar rewrites history – proves that his father is innocent and avenge the bad elements.

Sarath Kumar as usual excels in the stunt sequences. As a cop in Malaysian police, he is perfect fit. He is ravishing in formal outfits. He is right there singing romantic duets at catchy locales of Phuket.

Namitha as usual oozes glamour, while Farzana is adequate. Vivek, who plays Sarath Kumar’s friend, fails to evoke laughter. The rest of the cast includes actress Jayasudha, veterans Vijayakumar and Radha Ravi. The movie, which has enough elements to appease action-lovers, has unfortunately a very weak screenplay. Events unfold in quick pace without any logic or conviction. But Dinesh has managed to sustain some interest towards the latter half. Vidyasagar’s music is a letdown as the songs fails to stick to hearts. Bubathy’s cinematography is good.

The movie which has adrenaline-pumping action is advised strictly for those who love to see action films. With logic less stunt sequences and wafer-thin screenplay, 1977 is a let down.

MOVIE REVIEW:
Starring: Arya, Pooja.
Direction: Bala.
Music: Ilayaraja
Production: Vasans Visual Ventures.
After three years in the making, Bala’s Naan Kadavul has finally hit screens bringing along with it tremendous expectations of a film that can potentially make us relive the magic that is synonymous with his works. Naan Kadavul, the title tells you a lot, it is about a man who believes that he is the Almighty and confers upon himself the right to decide the death and rebirth or otherwise of a soul. A complex concept and it requires a craftsman of Bala’s accomplishment and persistence to execute it. The film explores a world and people that are largely unknown to most of us. It is hard to even imagine that such a world of misery and despair does exist very close to us; more than being hard to imagine, it is hard to believe. Do such things really happen in the world around us?

Looking straight into the lives of people who have to beg for a living, Naan Kadavul takes what one might call a brutal view of the existence that they are forced to lead. What forces them to lead such a miserable life? One, it is their circumstances and their helplessness; second, it is a mafia of sorts being run by a heinous group of people indulging in human trade. We are made to feel the pain and distress in their lives. There are scenes that can make you squirm in your seats, literally. Now, where does an Aghori sanyasi from the holy terrains of Kasi fit into such a plot? It is a lot like the return of the prodigal son to his fold after years of alienation. But here the son who has returned is not repentant but is foul mouthed, conceited and unapproachable. But, in spite of all the repulsiveness that he exudes, there is also an air of mysticism about him. Largely unconcerned about what happens around him, he smokes weed, chants mantras in a different language, does death defying yoga poses, blows the conch and does many more things that increase the mystery about him. But as if by Almighty’s design, he destroys the evil men. You might feel that the pace is slack in the first half, but don’t lose heart, things pick up considerably in the second.

That is the story in a nutshell, but there is more to the movie than just the storyline. In fact, the story seems to be of secondary importance to the depiction of unsavory and disturbing realities. Bala has created a world of misery where cruel men make the rules. But, it looks like he was not sure as to where to draw the line. The dungeon like setting, the mutilated people (you see people with all kinds of deformities), the sharp and crude words used and the animal like treatment meted out to them take a toll on the viewer very early in the movie. It looks like the director wanted to leave a lump in your throat but ends up giving you an uneasy stomach. The movie can be analyzed at length if necessary, but it is suffice to say that Bala’s signature shines through at all places. His attention for detail, the painstaking picturisation, the raw and original stunts are all there. And, even in the midst of such depressing nothingness he manages to infuse some very natural and likeable humor, treading a very thin line. It helps to liven up the atmosphere a bit. But the end feeling is that he got too obsessed with depicting the cruelties inflicted on the beggars by their ‘owners’ which does not help the final product.

Performances! In a Bala film, you expect the actors to be at their best. Surprisingly, for all the hype, Arya does not have that much of screen time though he does make an impact whenever he appears. He doesn’t have much to work with though. He has always got the same stoic expression, uttering the same intonations and striking the same poses. But getting to maintain that demeanor is not easy and he has worked hard to do it which can be seen. Pooja as a blind beggar touches us when she first appears, but the feeling soon wears off. Nevertheless, she has maintained a consistent feeling of pathos putting in considerable effort into her performance. The disabled and mutilated people, who should have been picked straight out of real life, live their lives on screen. But the real surprise packet of the film is the comedian Krishnamoorthy, who has been previously known only for his capers with Vadivelu. He turns out a really well etched performance. All credit to Bala for spotting the serious actor in him.

Technically speaking the movie is high on production values. Be it the townscape of Kasi or the rustic temple environs or the dark dungeons, the images have been captured well. Ilayaraja’s music surprisingly doesn’t make one sit up and take notice, mostly because it is gelled neatly into the narrative. Dialogues by Jayamohan are few but very crisp and one feels that he had an influence in the way actors and an actress of the current generation are mercilessly bashed about in a scene. And, if you think that the movie is set mostly in Kasi then you are wrong, it is hardly around for 10 minutes.

Bala has tried to debate a few serious issues in the movie. The first is obviously about who is God? He also talks about life and death and how death is actually a boon to one who cannot lead a good life. Summing up, Naan Kadavul is not a movie that everyone can digest. It shows reality in such brutality that you wonder whether such things really do happen. It cannot be called violent; the word ‘brutal’ has to be repeated often to describe the movie. One feels the director could have toned it down a bit, it leaves one very disturbed. And, it is hard to believe that the censors passed this movie with a U/A, it is difficult to see how children can be expected to digest such fare which at times borders on the gory. Even adults would need a tough mind to endure this movie. It will make you squirm, cringe, nod and laugh in alternation. Don’t’ expect a regular entertainer, be prepared to get jolted.

Karthik Anitha Movie Review:
Clean entertainers have become a rarity in Tamil cinema these days. Full marks to debutant Sree Hari for coming out with a movie that is laced with romance devoid of any clichés and double entendre. What is striking in ‘Karthik Anitha’ is that it is no regular boy meets girl and falling in love story. It is about the tale of friendship, sacrifice with romance as the backbone.

Sree Hari has given a ‘sophisticated’ feel to the film that is set in a residential colony in Chennai. Quite appropriate to the tagline of the movie, it is a neighbourhood love story which today’s youngsters bound to come across. Thankfully the director has ensured that it is no tear-jerker and the hero doesn’t flex his muscles or renders punch lines.

The movie features two newcomers Rathan and Manju around whom the whole movie revolves. Rathan has pleasing looks and does render a convincing performance even though he is a novice. Manju misses out on the looks, but manages it with a decent portrayal. Interestingly Kotta Sreenivasa Rao and Rajan P Dev, who made a name for themselves, doing menacing baddies, settles down for character roles. Both excel in their roles with Kotta Sreenivasa Rao walking away with sympathy.

Karthik (Rathan) is a happy-go-lucky youngster who spends all his time with his neighbour Anitha (Manju). They study together in a college. Karthik’s father Ramachandra Murthy (Kotta Sreenivasa Rao) and Anitha’a father Krishnamurthy (Rajan P Dev) are friends since their childhood. For no fault of his, Karthik incurs the wrath of his college principal and gets suspended from the college. He mistakes Anitha as the reason for the incident and starts to hate her. In contrast, she gets attracted towards Karthik and romance blossoms in her. Turn of events leads to Anitha’s father arranging for his daughter’s wedding with a software professional thanks to the help of Ramachandra Murthy. Meanwhile, Karthik slowly gets attracted towards Anitha. A shocked Ramachandra Murthy develops cardiac arrest and dies. Did Karthik manage to convince Anith’a parents and marry her forms the climax.

The movie has shades of ‘Piriyadha Varam Vendum’ and ‘Kannum Kannum’.

Movie Review:
Vikram K Kumar's 13B did what a horror movie needs to do – gave goosebumps at every turn in the first half. It is shot in monochrome and the background score puts a chill into the mundane.

But as it moves into flashback mode and an agitated Madhavan tries to save his family, there are too many twists and the story starts losing credibility. The story is all over the place and the eerie quality created right at the start is soon forgotten.

An abnormally happy joint family (do they even exist these days?), move into a posh apartment numbered 13B. The milk curdles daily; Manu’s (Madhavan) pics taken on his camphone inside the apartment are always distorted; they can’t drive a nail in the puja room; the elevator never works only for Manu forcing him to take the stairs (terrifying indeed!!!); the neighbour’s dog refuses to enter their apartment and the television automatically switches to channel 13 at 13:00 hours to a program that is exclusively aired for their family.

Though the women in the house are ga-ga over the show Sab Khairiyat Hai, it is only Manu who realizes that their life is dictated by that show. He drags into this supernatural mess, his police officer friend Shiva and starts putting together the pieces. A gory massacre of a family; a murderer still out free while the family’s mentally ill brother (Deepak Dobriyal) is accused of the crime; a spurned lover and the television’s part in the crime is what they uncover.

The blindman and the rest of the cast’s roles were trivial while Madhavan was the only one with something to do in the movie.

Give it a miss. Doesn’t captivate.

Movie Review:
Starring: Sadhika Randhawa, Sarwar Ahuja, Sanjay Mishra, Khayali and Heena Tasleem

Director: Prakash Saini

Viju (Sanjay Mishra) is a middle class man, a clerk happily married to Kavita (Sadhika). But their happy married life gets disturbed with the arrival of their new neighbours. Amongst them is Shyam Gopal Varma (Sarwar) who is an aspiring filmmaker. With him are his two buddies – Prem who works as a media promoter and Aslam a private bank employee. These three friends’ loud quarrels taking almost every night leaves the peace loving couple annoyed. When Shyam learns through an ad of a TV channel about a contest about a “real film’ to be made and submitted, he immediately rushes to the channel office only to learn that he has 500 more competitors. Struggling to find the right subject, when Shyam sees his next door couple engaged in a high strung display of physical affection, he then and there decides to make a “real film’ on the real couple but without their knowledge. What chaos it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

Let us get it straight, this film is a C grader aimed at titillating the audience of the smaller centers so one is not expecting any sensible stuff in here. But the makers seem to have taken even their loyal audience in such centers for granted by providing utter rubbish in the name of cinema. Tasteless double intended jokes, pathetic script, non existent direction and bad acting, you name it and you get it all in plenty. The producer Ashok Bagla, to satisfy his acting urge tortures you with his poor attempts at acting by giving himself a role in this film.

Sadhika Randhawa is known better for only one thing – her skin show. Her acting skills are still a doubt despite having been around in the industry for a good decade. Well she does what she is best at. Sanjay Mishra has got his impeccable comic timing right yet again and he is the only reason we have given half a star in the rating. Sarwar Ahuja, the Zee Cinestars Ki Khoj needs to KHOJ (discover) his acting skills as soon as possible or he will be soon extinct. Khayali the laughter challenge dude is simply irritating. Heena Tasleem adds more glam quotient with her hot moves.

Movie Review
The film opens in the 12th century where Rangaraja Nambi (Kamal Hassan), a staunch Vaishnavite, opposes the removal of Lord Vishnu's idol by King Kulothunga Chozhan (Napoleon), who is a strong believer of Shiva. Nambi is punished and thrown into the deep sea tied to the idol. His wife Kothai (Asin) also kills herself. Then the story cuts to the US where Dr Govind (Kamal) discovers a deadly virus, which catches the attention of the government including President George Bush (Kamal). But his boss tries to sell the vial to the enemies and now it’s the turn of our hero to protect it from causing damage.

Dr Govind is pursued by a former CIA agent-turned-mercenary Keith Fletcher (Kamal) and his Tamil interpreter (Mallika Sherawat), who land up in Tamil Nadu. An array of other characters are drawn into the chase—Balram Naidu (Kamal), the Telugu speaking RAW chief, a Chinese martial arts teacher (Kamal) thirsting to take revenge on Fletcher, Vincent Poovarahan (Kamal) a Dalit activist , Krishnaveni Patti (Kamal), Khalifullah Khan (Kamal) and a Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh(Kamal). Andal, a Brahmin girl, is also unwittingly drawn into a long chase. What follows is a cat and mouse game till the Tsunami climax.

It's actually hard to believe that in this age of experimentation within the commercial format, the director could think of such a moth-balled story. The earlier Kamal films in which he played dual or multiple roles, like Avvai Shanmukhi, Michael Madan Kamaraj and Indian, were far superior in style and content compared to his latest 10 avatars.

The trouble with the format is that far too many characters of the actor criss-cross without any reason—or they don’t make any difference to the story. It is obvious that characters like the Punjabi pop singer Avatar Singh, the tall Khalifullah Khan, the Japanese martial arts expert , etc., are unnecessarily stitched together to make it a perfect 10. The real crisis point in the film is nebulous. The film also coasts along at a doleful pace—185 minutes. Kamal’s prosthetic makeup, especially as George Bush, Fletcher and Khan, is a bit of a dampener. But Brian Jennings’ special effects, mainly of the climax Tsunami scene, are top class by Indian standards.

Himesh Reshammiya’s music is nothing much to talk about other than Kallai Mattum. But Devi Sri Prasad’s background score is superb and makes up for everything. Cinematographer Ravi Varman may take a bow, as his camerawork is glossy and superb. The big plus for watching the movie is the one-man acting school, Kamal Hassan. He pitches in yet another fantastic performance.

Among the 10 avataars, the pick of the lot is Naidu the bumbling cop, as the actor is able to bring out his impeccable sense of comic timing. Asin looks cute as the chirpy Andal, but beyond a point her character irritates you with her frequent Perumale.. calls. Her dubbing is top class and deserves special mention. Mallika, in a brief role sizzles. M.S.Bhaskar and napolean in small roles shines.

Movie Review
Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Raaz, Arjun Mathur, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Violante Placido
Director: Raja Menon

Barah Aana is a comic thriller that narrates the tale of three unlikely friends comprising of a stubborn but dependable driver Shuklaji (Naseeruddin Shah), a mischievous watchman Yadav (Vijay Raaz), and an ambitious waiter Aman (Arjun Mathur). Driven by an unfortunate situation, Yadav stumbles upon a crime. On realizing that it is quiet a low risk way to make some extra money he lures his two pals Yadav and Shuklaji into it as well. But as money starts coming in all three of them start showing personality changes. Soon things start going out of hand and it all leads them individually to destinations that they had never planned.

Raja Menon’s Barah Aana is a complete fun ride that delivers what it promises. Despite made on a shoe string budget this song less film is a watch for the brilliant chemistry and fun filled banter between it’s three diverse personality characters enacted by Vijay Raaz, Arjun Mathur and Naseeruddin Shah. The Italian girl played by Violante Placido’s love angle with Aman however slows down the narrative a bit. Shot on actual locations in the slums of Dharavi, Mumbai the film has many a relatable incidents. The very beginning of the film where a living man (Naseer) is officially considered dead sets the ball rolling and the fun never stops. The camerawork however could have been better as the low lighting at times gets a bit irritating.

Arjun Mathur who recently impressed with his act in Luck By Chance gets better scope to showcase his acting prowess this time and he succeeds. Naseer should be lauded for encouraging new filmmakers by being a part of their projects wholeheartedly. Tannishtha Chatterjee in a small but significant role is very good. Manabanoo Mody Kotwal as the Cutlet Aunty is hilarious. But the one to watch out for in this one is Vijay Raaz. It is certainly his best performance till date.

Go for Barah Aane without any expectations and chances are you will come back with a big smile on your face. -Sampurn Media

Movie Review: Ek Se Bure Do; Star cast: Arshad Warsi, Natassha, Rajpal Yadav, Tussha, Vijay Raaz and Govind Namdeo; Director: Tarique Khan; Rating: * - Spells double trouble.

The first half of the year 2009 shall be always remembered as the worst in terms of content for the Bollywood films released in this period. Just when we thought you can’t get more bad films than what we were subjected since last few weeks – Lottery, Kisse Pyar Karu etc, here comes the long stuck in the cans – Ek Se Bure Do.

This apology of a film as its name suggest is literally double trouble. The makers have tried to en cash on the ensemble cast of character actors who have most of the time left the audiences impressed but forgot to add a good plot. The film is an attempted comedy of errors as two crooks played by Arshad Warsi and Rajpal Yadav create chaos leading more trouble for the audience and the film’s characters alike. The two heroines Natassha aka Anita Hassanandani of Ekta Kapoor’s serials fame and the other new comer Tussha are portrayed as dimwit babes whom our heroes shown flirting with. Adding to the existing chaos are Govind Namdeo, Vijay Raaz (in good form yet again), Yashpal Sharma and Snehal Dhabi who complicate it all further. The proceedings get so irritating after a point of time that you wish to stage a walk out. Bad production values, jarring music, non-existent direction and script, tasteless dialogues you name it and you get it all in this pathetic film. Agreed the film is aimed at the masses but even they will give a thumbs down to such idiotic entertainer. The only thing you perhaps remember is the hot item song shot on dusky beauty Brinda Parekh.

It seems Arshad must have signed this film quick in the wake of his Munnabhai MBBS success as he finally got a leading man offer in this one. But now as years have passed he too must have realized its no point promoting this film. As we see the film we realize why Arshad and even Rajpal Yadav (who for the second time after Rama Rama Kya Hai Ye Drama seems to have been given the lead role) were embarrassed to promote this film. Natassha with her over the top acting makes us hope she remains trapped in the idiot box and doesn’t appear on the big screen. Tussha is just about passable. Amongst the huge horde of character artists the only ones to impress are Vijay Raaz and Snehal Dhabi. Rest all simply shriek in the name of comedy.

AYAN REvIEW
Ayan is one movie that, according to me, shows its best within the first 15 minutes, only to fizzle out as the story proceeds.

The movie begins by showing Suriya aka Deva as a wealthy and well-educated traveller ( who criticizes corporates) only to find his English to be replaced with Madras slang and his true profession revealed when he leaves the airport. Suriya is a smuggler working for Prabhu (Doss)and in this intro scene, he is seen smuggling pirated copy of a diwali release.

In the next few scenes the villain emerges. Akashdeep Segal (Kamalesh), son of a friendly rival of Prabhu’s gang wants to depart from the friendly ways and establish himself as the numero uno. Segal informs the police about the piracy and Suriya and gang have a close esca...

Delhi 6 Movie Online Review:

First things first. What does the name of the film signify? I had grown up in Delhi and call it home, but to my shame I had no clue what Delhi 6 was till I was glibly educated by a friend from Chennai of all places. Delhi 6, he told me, is Chandni Chowk, or to be precise it is the postal code of that area. For those who are familiar with the city of Delhi, Chandni Chowk is evocative of several everlasting images: narrow, crowded streets, mosques, temples, ancient, dilapidated houses, small shops, pushcarts selling handicrafts, food, sweets, clothes and other colourful paraphernalia and crowds of people on foot, cycles and rickshaws swarming like shoals of fievery direction. It is in this world that this film is based.

Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) brings his grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) to Delhi all the way from the U.S. of A and gets involved in the mad, mad world that is Chandni Chowk. He is, of course, the typical NRI kid who is at once enamoured, amused and frustrated by the convolutions of life in his home town. He is surprised by the adulation he is given by people he doesn’t even remember, scoffs at the concept of arranged marriage, is enraged by the overwhelming influence of religion and superstition in the society and breaks into slightly lame hip-hop moves when his aunts are singing folk songs. The film is predictably about his tryst with the city and how he comes to terms with it and learns to accept and love it, flaws and all. But that is the only predictable thing about the film.

The story is… well… to put it mildly, strange, but not in a bad way. The movie can be neatly divided into two parts: the first part, which is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s personal tribute to Chandni Chowk, and the second part, in which Mehra suddenly realises that he needs to tell a story as well. Nothing really happens in the first half. Chandni Chowk is presented in all its bustling, colourful glory in quick pictorial montages and breathtaking cinematography. Characters are introduced along with plot points and themes and it is all done rather cleverly. But the viewer is left wondering where the story is going and what all of it is leading to because the plot seems to lose itself just before the intermission. It’s as if the whole purpose of the first half is to lay the groundwork for the second half which is explosive in comparison. The story unfolds quickly and the viewer begins to understand the importance of some of the events in the first half and as things rapidly go pear-shaped the movie sets up for a dramatic and unexpected climax.

The actors have done a good job with Abhishek Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman and Sonam Kapoor putting in very competent performances, but the supporting actors steal the show in my humble opinion. Powerful performances by Atul Kulkarni, Om Puri, Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta and Vijay Raaz keep the film real and moving. But the characters take a backseat to the visual appeal of the film. Where Rang De Basanti had strong characters who just happened to be from Delhi, the characters in this film seem incidental to the city. The co-existence of Hindus and Muslims in Chandni Chowk is the most important aspect of the film. Hence, the film regularly breaks into a splendid colourful theatrical performance of Ram Lila on the one hand and has several magnificent shots of thousands of Muslims kneeling in prayer at the Jama Masjid. A.R. Rehman’s score for this film is also very good and in my opinion far superior to that of Slumdog Millionaire.

The film is a homage to Delhi and Chandni Chowk, but it isn’t a letter of recommendation. It shows the beauty and grandeur of the city and the hearts of the people that live in it, but it also shows the squalor, the corruption, the blindness and the sheer stupidity. It shows you that it is a city that must be loved and hated, and by that token makes it believable and more importantly human. If you love Delhi, you should watch this movie. For those you don’t love Delhi, this isn’t a must watch, but it is a good watch, and it just might persuade you to make a trip.

Aa Dekhen Zara Movie Online Review:

Ray Acharya (Neil Nitin Mukesh), a struggling photographer has nothing going for him… until he inherits a very ‘special’ camera from his grandfather which changes his life in a way that he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams.

The ‘power’ of the camera changes Ray’s destiny overnight. His life becomes one big roller coaster ride that takes him from rags to riches and also helps him meet the love of his life, Simi (Bipasha Basu) who is an exciting sexy DJ with a mind of her own. Everything is hunky dory and moving towards ‘happily ever after’.

As they say with great power comes great responsibility and in Ray’s case, also great danger. He must now face up to the dark side of reality and win not only against the evil forces but also against fate.

Aa Dekhen Zara is a fast-paced, romantic musical thriller with some great edge of the seat action.

Can Ray change his date with fate? Aa Dekhen Zara...........
